Start with your property

Prepare the information that shapes the scope.

Identify the purpose of the wall, the proposed ground levels and any improvements nearby. Explain what needs to remain usable and what the work may disturb.

West Point’s Building Department describes its responsibility for plan review and inspections. Check the current application requirements before assuming a preferred layout is ready for construction.

01

Keep the plan current

Use available drawings to show the wall position, ground levels and nearby uses. Mark uncertain dimensions rather than disguising them as final measurements. Confirm what the review needs and which decisions belong with a qualified designer.

02

Fit the wall into the project phase

An established yard and a wider construction project can have different access, sequence and protection needs. Describe which other work is planned and which surfaces are already complete. Do not assume a quote for stone placement includes every neighboring task.

03

Discuss staging and removal early

Show where delivery could unload, how placement equipment reaches the wall and where excavated soil could be handled. Those spaces may overlap with normal use of the property. Ask who restores affected areas and removes excess material.

04

Put responsibilities in the proposal

Identify which party handles material selection, required design, permissions, inspections and changes. Confirm drainage and finish assumptions in writing. The goal is a clear project boundary, not an unverified promise that every item is automatically included.

A useful first conversation

What to include in the inquiry

  • Wall purpose and available site drawings.
  • Proposed uses above and below the wall.
  • Project phase and already-finished surfaces to protect.
  • Staging, removal, drainage and review responsibilities.

Questions for the next step.

Clear answers make the next decision easier.

What makes an initial inquiry useful?

A property location, purpose, approximate dimensions, available plans and broad access photos help explain the work. Identify uncertainties instead of assuming they have already been designed.

Can restoration be assumed from a wall price?

No. Confirm the intended finish and which affected areas are included. Different proposals may place restoration and related trades outside the wall scope.
